On an Island in the Sun… (Any Suggestions?)

The wife and I (and a few of her immediate family members) are looking to go on a Caribbean vacation in January of '09.  We're actively looking right now through various travel agencies for a decent deal that isn't going to break the bank but is also an all-inclusive resort (meals, drinks, tips, etc) and preferably has no kids allowed on the resort.  Has anyone out there been to any resort in any of the islands that they recommend or do not recommend?  Please leave a comment if you have something to help us narrow our choices.

– The wife and I have been to Secrets Excellence in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.  It was wonderful and we're looking for something similar, but probably don't want to go back to the same place.  Going to the one in Cancun is a possibility, but some of us have been to Cancun before and may want to go somewhere else.

– I've been to Negril, Jamaica, but not to an all-inclusive resort.  Not sure how they compare but where I was staying struck me as more suitable for college kids than more grown-up folks.

– A couple people have suggested St. Thomas (no specific resort).

I recommend Sandals resorts – they have many Caribbean locations to choose from.

Club Med Turks is nice also. If you want a bunch of info on it, buzz me. I worked there for 8 months. 🙂

do they actually have resorts that don't allow kids? (besides hedonism, that is. heh) the only time i was in the caribbean was on our honeymoon. we went on a cruise, though. and i didn't see any kids at all…

I can only speak for Club Med, but I know that Turks is one of the few left that is adults (meaning 18 and over) only.

We've considered a cruise, but I'm not sure everyone is up for one. The folks we've spoken to about Caribbean cruises said they wish they'd just stayed at one of the islands for the week instead.I think the adults-only resorts are definitely few and far between, which is why I'm not limiting our search just to those places. However, I know that it makes a huge difference in the atmosphere of the place. When we were in the DR we spoke to some folks at another resort that was supposedly just as nice, but they were really bummed out by all the kids that were mobbing the place, the pools, etc.

Forget the Caribbean, go to the Ice Hotel in Sweden above the Arctic Circle! 😉
